How to Choose the Right Baby Mattress: A Complete Guide
There's so much to think about before a new baby arrives. And while the pram debate and the nursery paint colour tend to get all the attention, the mattress - the one thing your little one will spend the most time on - often gets left to the last minute. We think it deserves a little more love than that.
Your baby will sleep for most of the day and night in those early weeks. The surface they rest on matters not just for comfort, but for their safety and development. Here at The Tiny Bed Company, every mattress we make is handcrafted in Britain and complies with the latest UK and European safety standards. So, whether you're setting up a Moses basket for a newborn or fitting out a cot bed that'll grow with your toddler, this guide will help you choose with confidence.
Why the Right Baby Mattress Makes Such a Difference
It might sound like an obvious thing to say, but a baby mattress really isn't just a baby mattress. The wrong one - too soft or poorly fitted pose genuine risks. The right one, on the other hand, supports healthy spinal development, helps your baby stay at a safe temperature, and gives you real peace of mind at 3am.
The good news? Once you know what to look for, it becomes much simpler. Firmness, breathability, fit, and the right certifications - that's really what it comes down to.
Baby Mattress Safety Standards: What Actually Matters
Let's start with the certifications, because this is where a lot of parents get lost in jargon. At The Tiny Bed Company, all of our mattresses comply with BS 7177 for flammability and crucially, without the use of any antimony, phosphorus, or arsenic-based fire retardant treatments. No hidden nasties.
Beyond flammability, each mattress type complies with the specific safety standard that applies to it:
• Moses basket, carrycot & pram mattresses — complies with EN 18700
• Crib, cot, cot bed & single bed mattresses - complies with EN 16890
• Travel cot mattresses - complies with BS 1877 Part 10 for safety and performance.
Firm Baby Mattress: Why Firmness Isn't Negotiable
If there's one thing we'd want every new parent to know, it's this: a firm baby mattress isn't a preference – it's a safety essential.
A safe baby mattress should feel firm and flat when you press your palm into it, and should spring straight back the moment you lift your hand.
Don't worry - firm doesn't mean uncomfortable. Your baby is light enough that a firm, supportive surface is exactly what their little body needs. It's also far better for healthy spinal alignment during those all-important early months.
When Should I Replace a Baby Mattress?
A baby mattress does not need to be replaced on a set schedule. However, it should only be used while it remains firm, flat, clean, and well-fitting within the sleep space.
UK safer sleep guidance states that babies should sleep on a firm, flat surface, and that the mattress should be in good condition and fit the cot, crib or Moses basket properly.
Over time, a mattress may lose these essential properties. If this happens, it should no longer be used.
Signs that a baby mattress should be replaced include:
1. The mattress is no longer firm or flat
The sleep surface should be firm and flat. If the mattress feels soft, uneven, or shows signs of dipping or indentation, it is no longer suitable for use.
2. The mattress is damaged or worn
If the mattress has tears, holes, sagging areas, or misshapen edges, it may not provide a safe and consistent sleep surface.
3. The mattress is not clean and completely dry.
Guidance recommends that a baby’s mattress should be clean and protected by a waterproof cover. If the mattress has become wet internally, heavily soiled, or cannot be kept clean and dry, it should be replaced.
4. The mattress does not fit properly.
The mattress should fit snugly within the sleep space, with no gaps between the mattress and the sides. If it no longer fits correctly, it should not be used.
5. You are unsure of the mattress’s condition or previous use.
If a mattress has been used before and you cannot be certain that it remains firm, clean, flat, and undamaged, it is safer not to use it.
Which Baby Mattress Is Right for Your Little One?
We offer five filling options within our Tiny Dreamer™ range. Each one meets the same safety standards - what changes is the feel and the materials. Here's a quick guide to help you choose:
Tiny Dreamer™ - Premium Nursery Grade Foam
Lightweight, consistently firm, and anti-allergy, with a removable washable cover. If you're looking for an affordable mattress that covers all the essentials beautifully, this is it.
Tiny Dreamer Essentials™ - Open Coil Springs
Our entry-level spring mattress. Open steel springs surrounded by layers of premium nursery foam, with crush-resistant walls that hold their shape over time.
Tiny Dreamer Plus™ - Luxury Pocket Springs
Each spring in this mattress works independently, responding to your baby's individual movements and body shape. The result is personalised support with low motion transfer - particularly lovely for lighter sleepers. A breathable baby mattress like the Tiny Dreamer Plus™ is especially popular with parents whose babies tend to run warm.
Tiny Dreamer Natural™ - 100% Wool & Coconut Coir
Our naturally filled mattress, for parents who want to keep things as nature-intended. Layers of 100% sheep's wool wrap around a core of coconut coir - which is a traditional blend of coconut fibre and natural latex that delivers the firm, responsive support that safe sleep experts recommend.
Tiny Dreamer Deluxe™ - Luxury Pocket Springs & Coconut Coir
The very best of both worlds. Individually wrapped pocket springs meet a layer of natural coconut coir, creating a dual-core mattress with exceptional support and breathability. The dual-sided design means it adapts beautifully as your child grows, a perfect long-term investment.
Getting the Baby Mattress Fit Right
Here's something that surprises a lot of parents: the gap between the mattress and the sleep space is actually a safety requirement, not just a sizing preference.
In line with EN 18700 and EN 16890 certifications, the gap between your mattress and the sides and ends of the sleep space must not exceed 30mm on any side. Gaps larger than this create spaces where tiny heads and limbs can become trapped, which is why getting the size right really matters.
For most standard cots and cot beds, our ready-to-ship mattresses will fit perfectly. But Moses baskets, co-sleepers, heirloom cots, and some imported designs often have non-standard internal dimensions. That 'nearly fits' mattress? It isn't good enough and with us, it doesn't have to be. That's exactly why we offer a fully bespoke custom mattress service. You tell us the exact shape, interior length and width of your sleep space, choose your preferred filling, and our team handcrafts your mattress to those precise measurements. For uniquely shaped sleep spaces, we'll get in touch to make sure we get it just right.
Choosing the Right Baby Mattress by Sleep Space
Moses Baskets
Moses baskets are hand-woven, which means their internal dimensions vary much more than you might expect even between sizes from the same brand. A snug fit from day one is essential. All our Moses basket mattresses comply with EN 18700 and made to fit securely, with no unsafe gaps.
Cribs & Co-Sleepers
The step between Moses basket and full-size cot, cribs and co-sleepers often come in specific sizes that don't always match standard mattress dimensions. Our crib and co-sleeper mattresses cover a wide range of popular models and if yours is a little different, our custom service has you covered.
Cots & Cot Beds
Cot beds convert into a toddler bed as your little one grows, so the mattress you choose here is genuinely a long-term investment. Our cot and cot bed mattresses comply with EN 16890 and available across the full Tiny Dreamer™ range. For a cot bed, we'd especially recommend exploring our pocket spring options they're built to last.
Travel Cots
A well-fitted travel cot mattress makes a real difference to both safety and sleep quality, whether you're visiting family, heading on holiday, or just moving the sleeping space around the house. Our travel cot mattresses comply with BS 1877 Part 10, fold neatly in half for easy storage, and come with a handy carry bag.
Cutting Through the Baby Mattress Marketing
The baby sleep market can feel overwhelming.
Here's what we'd suggest looking for:
• EN 18700, EN 16890, or BS 1877 Part 10 depending on the mattress type. These are independently tested standards.
• BS 7177 flammability certification.
• Transparent construction you should know exactly what's inside the mattress and why each layer is there.
• Clear size specifications so you can verify the fit before you buy.
• Removable, washable covers.
• A manufacturer's warranty we offer two years on every mattress we make, as standard.
A Few Simple Safe Sleep Tips
Even the very best mattress needs to be used correctly to do its job well. A few reminders worth keeping close:
• Always place your baby on their back to sleep - on a firm, flat surface. Every time.
• Keep the sleep space simple - a single, well-fitted sheet is all that's needed. No pillows, duvets, bumpers, or positioners.
• Aim for a room temperature recommended by the likes of Lullaby Trust and NHS and avoid overdressing your baby.
• Remove the mattress cover regularly for washing and check the mattress itself for any changes in firmness or signs of wear over time.
• If you use a mattress protector, make sure it's fitted snugly and lying completely flat.
